Gerald D. Maxwell

Dr. Maxwell is the Associate Dean for Postdoctoral and External
Affairs and a Professor of Neuroscience in the School of Medicine at the
Health Center. As Associate Dean he provides leadership, oversight and
coordination for all aspects of postdoctoral affairs at the University
of Connecticut Health Center (UCHC). In addition, as part of his role he
acts as a liaison with entities within and external to the University to
foster relationships that are beneficial to the Health Center’s mission.
Dr. Maxwell received his B.S. degree from Yale University in
Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry and his Ph.D. in Biology from the
University of Oregon where his research focused on neural crest
development in the laboratory of Dr. James Weston. He subsequently
completed a postdoctoral research fellowship in developmental
neurobiology at Harvard Medical School working in the laboratory of Dr.
John Hildebrand. He joined the faculty at the UCHC in 1979. While at the
UCHC he ran a successful National Institutes of Health-funded research
program on neural crest development and differentiation for 20 years and
published widely in this area of research. From 1992-2007 Dr. Maxwell
served as the Associate Dean of the Graduate School for the Health
Center campus.
He currently devotes his full attention to his administrative duties
and teaching. Dr. Maxwell has a particular interest in advising trainees
and sponsors workshops on professional skills and career development for
postdoctoral fellows and graduate students.
