Research activities have been concerned with actions and interactions of radiation and chemical carcinogens during epithelial carcinogenesis. Previous studies have included tumor incidence, histopathology, cytokinetics, chemical induction of tumors, functional hemodynamics, and carcinogen-DNA interactions. We found that low-level x-radiation exposures enhance hydrocarbon carcinogenesis, and that radiation- and carcinogen-induced alterations in microvascular function and in proximal carcinogen-DNA binding are likely mechanisms.

Ongoing studies are investigating DNA mutagenesis and repair by gamma radiation in lymphoblasts from both normal and ataxia telangiectatic humans. We have constructed and are employing extra-chromosomal shuttle vectors in these studies, which are directed towards analysis of single base mutations, cell cycle effects, and the induction and characterization of specific repair proteins following exposures in the cumulative low-moderate dose range.

Clinical research has been in the laboratory and clinical applications of nuclear medicine, complex motion tomography and subtraction radiology to the diagnosis and treatment planning, as well as basic biologic phenomena, of a variety of dental pathologies, including healing bone wounds, oral carcinoma, treatment planning of benign neoplasms of the jaws, salivary gland disorders, and early crestal bone changes in marginal periodontitis. We also conduct clinical studies addressing the dosimetry and risk estimations for various TMJ, implant and intraoral imaging procedures, as well as digital imaging research.
