Development, Center for Regenerative Medicine and Skeletal Development
The research interests of our laboratory include the development of
new biomaterials, studies of structure-property relationships, surface
analysis and clinical trials of restorative dental materials.
Currently, the work on new materials involves investigations of the
dental applications of fiber-reinforced composites. These materials are
used as structural members in various clinical situations, such as
prosthodontic frameworks, retainers, splints and orthodontic archwires.
The materials are based on continuous fiber reinforcement of
thermoplastics and thermosets. The research includes studies of the
fiber-matrix interface, bulk mechanical and physical properties,
appliance design and clinical trials. Modes of failure identified in
clinical trials are used to construct computer and laboratory models,
which allow optimization of materials and design. Research tools include
SEM, XPS and FEA.
Surface analysis work is primarily in collaboration with research
directed by Dr. Gloria Gronowicz, on the effect of implant materials on
osetoblasts. Disks of clinical and model alloys are prepared with
well-defined surfaces and analyzed with SEM, EDX, XPS, AES and
profilometry. Results are correlated with biological assays to
understand the effects of topography and chemistry.
