FACULTY NEWS:
Dr. Robert B. Clark selected as 2007 Osborn
Biomedical Science Graduate Teaching Award Recipient by PhD Graduate
Students
At the June 7th Graduate Student Research Day,
Dr. Robert B. Clark,
Associate Professor of Immunology, was named the 2007 recipient of the
Osborn Biomedical Science Graduate Teaching Award. The Award was
established in 2005 with funding from the UConn Foundation and is
intended to recognize outstanding formal classroom teaching and
laboratory thesis mentoring. It is named for Dr. Mary Jane Osborn,
a founding faculty member of the Health Center, well known for her
teaching and research in microbiology, which earned her membership in
the National Academy of Science. The annual Award is chosen by a
group of graduate students representing all the major Ph.D. programs.
Two department chairs serve as faculty mentors for the selection
process, but are not voting members of the committee.

Dr. Jeffrey Hoch Receives NIH Grant for $2 Million Machine
UCHC has received a $2 million federal grant to purchase a
sophisticated imaging machine to study the structure, stability and
dynamics of proteins and their role in human disease. The instrument, an
800 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, will be used by
researchers at the Health Center and Storrs campuses of UConn and by
researchers at UMass (Amherst), Connecticut College, Dartmouth College,
Wesleyan and Yale Universities. “Nuclear magnetic resonance is a
powerful tool for probing those dynamics, detailing both the extent and
timescale of internal motions,” says
Dr. Jeffrey Hoch,
associate
professor of molecular, microbial and structural biology and principal
investigator of the grant. . “It is also a uniquely versatile tool for
determining molecular structure and probing interactions between
molecules.” The grant is one of 14 provided by the NIH National Center
for Research Resources High End Instrumentation Program, which provides
grants to support the purchase of sophisticated instruments costing more
than $750,000. The Health Center’s NMR Structural Biology Facility
currently houses spectrometers operating at 400, 500, and 600 MHz. The
new instrument is expected to be operational in 2008.

Professor of Cell Biology
Dr. Timothy Hla has
been recognized by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and its
National Advisory Board as the recipient of the prestigious Method to
Extend Research in Time Award. The award is designed to provide
long-term, stable support to investigators whose research competence and
productivity are distinctly superior and who are likely to continue to
perform in an outstanding manner.
