Background
Dr. Maxwell is the Associate Dean for Postdoctoral and External
Affairs and a Professor of Neuroscience in the School of
Medicine. As Associate Dean, he provides leadership, oversight
and coordination for all aspects of postdoctoral affairs at the
University of Connecticut Health Center (UCHC). In addition, he
serves as a liaison to a number of external organizations to
foster and maintain relationships that are beneficial to the
UCHC.
Dr. Maxwell received his B.S. degree in Molecular Biophysics
and Biochemistry from Yale University. He obtained his Ph.D. in
Biology from the University of Oregon. His thesis research in
the laboratory of Dr. James Weston focused on the developmental
biology of the embryonic neural crest. He subsequently completed
a postdoctoral research fellowship in developmental neurobiology
at Harvard Medical School in the laboratory of Dr. John
Hildebrand. As a faculty member at the UCHC he conducted a
National Institutes of Health-funded research program on the
molecular and cellular analysis of neural crest development from
1979-2000 and published widely in this area. Since 2000 he has
devoted his full effort to administration and teaching. He
teaches a wide range of subjects including stem cell biology and
regenerative medicine in addition to carrying out his
administrative roles.
Prior to being named the first Associate Dean for
Postdoctoral and External Affairs and establishing the Office of
Postdoctoral Affairs in 2007, Dr. Maxwell served as the
Associate Dean of the Graduate School for the Health Center
campus from 1992-2007. In that capacity he was responsible for
programs leading to the Ph.D. in Biomedical Science, the Master
of Public Health, and the Master of Dental Science degrees as
well as combined degree programs including the M.D./Ph.D., D.M.D./Ph.D.
and the M.D./M.P.H. He has a particular interest in advising
trainees and sponsors workshops on professional skills and
career development for postdoctoral fellows and graduate
students. |
