a look at the recent achievements of current Health Center graduate students and
postdoctoral fellows!
MAY
2008
Dr. Birgit Fogal (2007 Ph.D. graduate,
Neuroscience, PI: Dr,. Sandra Hewett) was awarded the 2008 Edward G.
Henderson Memorial Prize for outstanding Ph.D. thesis in Biomedical
Science for her thesis "Characterization of the cellular and biochemical
mechanisms underlying the deleterious effects of IL-1b to hypoxic
neuronal injury".
This prize was established in memory of Dr. Edward
G. Henderson, a faculty member in the Department of Pharmacology from
1968 to 1997. Dr. Henderson is remembered for his commitment to graduate
education and his dedicated supervision of graduate students.

Ms. Darce Costello (2008 M.P.H. graduate) was this year's recipient of the
2008 Mulvihill
Medal awarded by the Master of Public Health Program for the student
with the most outstanding academic record in combination with excellence
in their capstone project. Ms. Costello's thesis research project
was "Something's Lost but Something's Gained: Trajectories of
Alzheimer Caregivers' Burden and Benefit.
The award was established by Dr. James
E. and Mary Jane Mulvihill. Dr. Mulvihill was vice president,
provost, and executive director of UCHC from 1980 to 1992. He and
his wife were committed to the University and worked tirelessly on its
behalf.
MARCH
2008
Ms. Kelly Lauter (MD/PhD student, PI: Andrew Arnold)
received the National Research Service Award (F30) for her research
project titled “Molecular Pathogenesis of Hyperparathyroidism in Chronic
Kidney Disease”. The F30 program is funded through the National
Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) and
serves as a research training mechanism which provides funding for
graduate school tuition, dental school tuition, supplies, travel to
national meetings, and a monthly stipend.
OCTOBER
2007
Mr. Anand Merchant (Ph.D. student, Cell Biology, PI: Dr.
Marc Hansen) has been selected to present a poster at the 2007 NIH
Graduate Student Research Festival on October 11-12 in Bethesda,
Maryland. He is one of 250 graduate students selected from across the
nation to participate in this two day event that allows students to
present their current research, meet with other students across the
U.S., and learn about postdoctoral research opportunities on the NIH
campuses. The award includes expenses paid by NIH for the students
selected to attend the festival.
Ms. Anu Swaminathan and Ms. Anjali Mandlik (Ph.D.
students, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, PI: Dr. Hung Ton-That)
were co-first authors on the article “Housekeeping sortase facilitates
the cell wall anchoring of pilus polymers in Corynebacterium diphtheriae”
in Molecular Microbiology. 2007 Oct 4; PMID: 17919283. This is Ms.
Mandlik’s second first author publication (see April 2007).
SEPTEMBER
2007
Mr. Colin Kong (D.M.D./Ph.D. student, Skeletal,
Craniofacial, and Oral Biology, PI: Dr. Marc Hansen) received the
Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (F30). The
award, effective September 1, 2007, was created to offer an integrated
dental and graduate research training program that leads to attainment
of both the DDS/DMD and PhD (or equivalent) degrees. The F30 program is
funded through the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial
Research (NIDCR) and serves as a research training mechanism which
provides funding for graduate school tuition, dental school tuition,
supplies, travel to national meetings, and a monthly stipend.
AUGUST
2007
Mr. Andrew Gaspar (Ph.D. students, Molecular Biology and
Biochemistry, PI: Dr. Hung Ton-That) was a co-first author on the
article “An IgG-like domain in the minor pilin GBS52 of Streptococcus
agalactiae mediates lung epithelial cell adhesion” in Structure. 2007
August; 15(8):893-903. This is his second first author publication.
Ms. Seung-Joo Lee (Ph.D. student, Immunology, P.I: Dr.
Anthony Vella) was first author on the paper

of Supereffector CD8 T Cells That Become IL-7 Dependent" in
Journal of Immunology. 2007 Aug 15;179(4):2203-14.
JUNE
2007
Mr. Brian Adams, (Ph.D. student, Cell
Biology, P.I. Dr. Bruce White) received the Endocrine Scholars Award
for exceptional research trainees with outstanding achievements in basic
endocrine science. The award was one of only five given to graduate
students annually, and included a stipend of $4,000, registration to the 89th
Annual meeting of the Endocrine Society in Toronto June 1-5, membership
