Ph.D. in Biomedical Science: Biomedical Scholars Enrichment Track
Biomedical Scholars Enrichment Track
We have entered an era of unprecedented progress in the understanding
of the molecular and cellular mechanisms that underlie human disease.
Our current status is the culmination of numerous conceptual and
technological breakthroughs that have occurred over the past 50 years.
These advances can now be applied directly to the understanding of the
pathogenesis of specific human diseases. These developments have
fostered a need for basic scientists who are better able to understand
the implications of reductionist molecular and cellular biological
models in the overall context of human biology and disease.
Accordingly, in the 1998-99 academic year we inaugurated a new
exciting enrichment program for selected students designated the
Biomedical Scholars Track. This program is designed to broaden the
academic experience of a few highly motivated students who wish to
become better equipped to identify research problems with direct
relevance to human disease. The program also provides training and
experience in teaching subjects normally taught in medical and dental
schools. Tutorials with faculty members in a variety of subjects
including microbial pathogenesis, oncology, vascular biology, immunology
and neuroscience form the core of the enrichment experiences. Students
complete all regular requirements for the Ph.D. in addition to
participating in the enrichment experiences.
